Module 4 – Ovarian Cystectomy & Retrieval Techniques

Module-4-Image

Summary

There are various ovarian cysts such as dermoid cysts, endometriotic cysts and mucinous cysts. The underlying principles to remove the cysts are the same. We demonstrate how to develop the skills to approach ovarian cystectomy. The correct method of dissection, stripping the cyst from the ovarian walls and then retrieval are taught on innovative models. There is also a detailed discussion on tissue retrieval and the effects of electrodiathermy on ovarian tissue and techniques to employ to reduce the harmful effects on the ovarian cortex to a minimum.

Lectures

Schedule

Laparoscopic cystectomy is one of the common operations in Gynaecology. This module consists of lectures and videos to explain all the steps for carrying out a cystectomy.

Reading Material

These guidelines are taken from RCOG and help to grasp the theoretical knowledge of managing ovarian cyst in premenopausal and post menopausal women. The trainees will be assessed on their knowledge in their critical appraisal of this topic.

Laparoscopic Cystectomy

Presentation explaining all the steps to complete cystectomy without causing unnecessary bleeding and damage to ovarian tissue.

Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy (Video Lecture)

Video lecture explaining the technique for ovarian cystectomy. All steps have been shown to make it easy for trainees to understand the underlying principles such as dissecting in the anatomical planes, hemostasis, effective use of instruments and suction.

Specimen Retrieval

This video shows the technique for specimen retrieval using a retrieval bag with a tail.
